Be fearless.

People will tell you what you can’t do, where you can’t go, and who you can’t be. Forget these people. When I was in college, I failed a class because of my writing ability. Because of this, I dropped out and wrote my book in 10 days. I sold thousands of them and destroyed numerous obstacles along the way. Be fearless and erase all limitations.

Be forceful.

People don’t know what they want until you give it to them. Sometimes you have to be forceful with your offerings. Move people to action by creating demand for their needs. Henry Ford was known for saying, “If I asked the people what they wanted, they would have said ‘Faster Horses’” If you keep supplying and proving the need, people will buy what you’re selling.

Be unpredictable.

Most people act so routinely that you can predict their every move. To be more strategic, you must meander your way into different thought patterns, languages, and activities. By consciously creating opportunities for yourself and doing the unthinkable, you’ll be able to exceed your own expectations. Eventually, predictable people will ask you how you did it and you’ll have to give them your unpredictable answers.

Be unduplicatable.

No one can copy you if you create a signature style for yourself. Whether you’re wearing bushy bowties or carrying Birkin bags, you need your style to work in your favor. Always say to yourself, “There is no one doing what I’m doing in the way that I’m doing it.” Eventually, your uniqueness will attract the kind of reputation that you’ve been looking for. All millionaires are completely unduplicatable.

Be controversial.

To become a millionaire, you have to push the limits. You’ve got to ask for things that no one has dared to ask for. Controversy means that you are willing to walk and talk about the subjects that people avoid. Sometimes, you’ll be unpopular for being controversial, but do it anyways. Always push your agenda and help people understand what you’re trying accomplish. If they understand and want to help, bring them on your team.

Knowing the products, services, and problems in an industry not only helps you avoid the pitfalls of trial-and-error learning, but it also gives interested parties the confidence that you’re the right person to build this business. Your experience and credibility are very important to potential team members, investors, customers, suppliers, and strategic partners. If you don’t have the skills and experience to build your business, you’ll be fighting an uphill battle. When this is the case, it’s best to find advisors, partners, and team members who can fill in the gaps in your skill set. In the end, you and your team will need to have the experience and credibility necessary to build your business.

Many would-be entrepreneurs think they need money to start their new venture — no money, no business. When you have specific customers who are willing to buy your product as soon as you launch your venture, you have the ultimate validation of your solution, immediate sales, and early cash flow from which to grow. Selling your products or services prior to your launch is always a great strategy. If you can’t do it, you may not be ready to go.

5. Sound Business Model

Your business model is the way you’ll make money in your venture. It includes your sources of revenue, pricing, costs of goods sold, gross margin, operating costs, and profit margin — essentially the elements of an income statement.

The best businesses have multiple sources of revenue, competitive pricing, a 50 percent or better gross margin, and a 10 to 20 percent profit margin. If your numbers aren’t this attractive, it will be difficult to survive. So make sure all the numbers work before launching your venture.

2. Expand your emotional vocabulary.

Emotions create powerful physical and behavioral responses that are more complex than “happy” or “sad.” Putting your feelings into words has a therapeutic effect on your brain; if you’re unable to articulate how you feel, that can create stress. Here’s a great list of “feeling words” to help with labeling your emotions. Increase your emotional vocabulary with one new word each day.

3. Practice saying ‘no’ to yourself.

The ability to say “no” to yourself to put off short-term gratification for the long-term gain is an important life-skill. Like a muscle, it is strengthened with exercise. The more you practice saying “no” to small daily challenges, the better you can withstand major temptations.

There are plenty of daily temptations — social media, junk food, gossiping, Youtube. Make a goal of saying “no” to five different temptations each day.

4. Break visceral reactions.

A person without self-awareness runs on auto-pilot, and responds with knee-jerk reactions. Self-awareness allows you to assess situations objectively and rationally, without acting on biases and stereotypes.

Take a deep breath before you act, especially when a situation triggers anger or frustration. This gives you time to re-assess whether your response will be the best one.

Nate Kornell, an associate professor of cognitive psychology at Williams College who studies learning strategies, shares 3 ways we can become an efficient learner:

Embrace discomfort

According to Kornell, effective learning feels difficult. It’s this ability to embrace continuous discomfort that separates ultra-high-achievers from everyone else. For most people, once they’re pretty good at something – be it public speaking, writing or Excel – they become complacent and comfortable, unwilling to continue to challenge themselves. “You reach a plateau where you don’t experiment and you don’t practice new techniques because you’re satisfied,” he says. “The people who achieve the most in life are the ones that aren’t satisfied with 8 out of 10; the people who don’t stop until they are a 10 out of 10.” That requires risk taking, uncertainty, repetition, the pursuit of criticism and, yes, discomfort.

Stop cramming

Kornell, who has researched this topic extensively, believes that the act of forgetting information and then re-learning it, ideally multiple times, is what cements memories in the brain. The process of forgetting, and then repeatedly filling in those memory gaps, makes them stick. “You can’t add to your knowledge unless you give yourself a chance to forget,” which is why cramming produces such fleeting results.

Make connections

The more, the better. If you want to remember the information in a passage you are reading, root the text to as many additional contexts as possible. Pause frequently and think about how what you’re reading now relates to what you read earlier. But don’t stop there. If you really want the material to stick, make personal connections as well: relate the text to events that have happened in your own life, or the life of a friend or acquaintance. The more individual threads you can tie from the material in the book to other, independent realms of pre-existing knowledge, the more likely it is to stick around.

Believing in someone or something that’s too good to be true.

Some people are so charismatic and so confident that it can be tempting to follow anything they say. They speak endlessly of how successful their businesses are, how well liked they are, who they know, and how many opportunities they can offer you. While we know that some people really are successful and really want to help you, smart people need to be tricked only once before they start to think twice about a deal that sounds too good to be true. The results of naiveté and a lack of due diligence can be catastrophic. Smart people ask serious questions before getting involved because they realize no one, themselves included, are as good as they look.

Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

Albert Einstein said insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result. Yet there are a lot of people who seem certain that two plus two will eventually equal five. Smart people, on the other hand, need experience this frustration only once. The fact is simple: if you keep the same approach, you’ll keep getting the same results, no matter how much you hope for the opposite. Smart people know that if they want a different result, they need to change their approach, even when it’s painful to do so.

Trying to be someone or something you’re not.

It’s tempting to try to be whom you think people want you be, but no one likes a fake, and trying to be someone you’re not never ends well. Smart people figure that out the first time they get called out for being a phony, forget their lines, or drop out of character. They don’t recognize the relationships they’ve damaged, the jobs they’ve lost, and the opportunities they’ve missed as a result of trying to be someone they’re not. Smart people, on the other hand, make that connection right away and realize that happiness and success demand authenticity.

Trying to please everyone.

Almost everyone makes this mistake at some point, but smart people realize it’s simply impossible to please everybody, and trying to please everyone pleases no one. Smart people know that in order to be effective, you have to develop the courage to call the shots and make the choices you feel are right (not the ones everyone will like).

Playing the victim.

News reports and our social media feeds are filled with stories of people who seem to get ahead by playing the victim. Smart people may try it once, but they realize quickly that it’s a form of manipulation and that any benefits will come to a screeching halt as soon as people see it’s a game. But there’s a more subtle aspect of this strategy that only truly smart people grasp: to play the victim, you have to give up your power, and you can’t put a price on that.

3) Every failure puts you one step closer to success. Play the odds and know they are now in your favor. If you have just experienced defeat, all is good, you are getting closer to success.

4) Believe in yourself. I saved this one for last because if all else fails believing in yourself will pull you through. I have experienced time and time again when the only thing holding me from defeat was faith in myself and the words, “I can do it.” You are strong enough, good enough and deserving of all scores in the win column.”
