As moms we often push ourselves to the side, but I am demanding that you put yourself first for a bit and find a hobby!

Date only for fun. Date only for someone to see a movie with or share an adventure with. Don’t date to find the one. At least for a period of time. Get out there simply to enjoy someone’s company without the burden or pressure of wondering where it is going to go. Watch Out For These “Healthy” Foods That Can Cause You Harm

Are you ready for the biggest contradiction you’ll most likely hear all day?  There are healthy foods that can cause you some serious harm, meaning there really is too much of a good thing!  Check out the deemed ‘healthy’ foods that can do some serious damage if not consumed properly: 

KALE

Kale has a compound in it called thiocyanate that, in high amounts, severely interferes with iodine metabolism, which can, in turn, result in hypothyroidism. Eating too much kale in an effort to lose weight can actually lower your metabolism (and affect a lot of other things that your thyroid controls). The condition is not common, and drinking kale juice seems to pose the biggest risk. So enjoy it, the stuff is healthy in moderation.

SALMON

Salmon contains mercury, a neurotoxin. Too much of it can cause mercury poisoning and major neurological damage. Pregnant women are especially advised to limit their consumption of fish due to the presence of mercury.

But … how much mercury? Trace. About a zillionth the amount of fat that there is in the avocado. It’s considered a low-mercury fish, and you can safely eat 12 ounces of it per week (about two standard servings). But that’s it. So enjoy it, but don’t live on it just because you read one article that says it’s healthy.

GOJI BERRIES

Gram-per-gram, they have the same number of calories and almost the exact same number of grams of sugar. They’re not nutritionally the same given the goji berry’s wealth of vitamins, but if you’re watching your weight or if you’re diabetic? Your pancreas will view these as candy.

Enjoy goji berries. Like everything else, in moderation.

CHIA SEEDS

They’re not just for making creepy statues grow hair anymore (and yes, the chia in your pudding and the chia that grows out of that weird terra cotta thing your grandma loved are the same thing). They’re so healthy that you’re probably dying right now simply because you’re not eating them. They’re touted as an ancient superfood, rich in antioxidants, protein, fiber, and omega-3s. They should be added to your salad or even your raw organic kombucha. When mixed with a little agave nectar and almond milk, they taste delicious and look vaguely like frog eggs. Why the hell did we ever waste these little guys on statues?

Probably because of the potential for severe gastrointestinal side effects.  That cute thing chia seeds do in almond milk when they puff up? They do that in your body too, and the side effects can be painful. They even landed a guy in the ER for expanding post-ingestion and obstructing his airway.

Believing in someone or something that’s too good to be true.

While we know that some people really are successful and really want to help you, smart people need to be tricked only once before they start to think twice about a deal that sounds too good to be true. The results of naiveté and a lack of due diligence can be catastrophic. Smart people ask serious questions before getting involved because they realize no one, themselves included, are as good as they look.

Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

Albert Einstein said insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result. Yet there are a lot of people who seem certain that two plus two will eventually equal five. Smart people, on the other hand, need experience this frustration only once. The fact is simple: if you keep the same approach, you’ll keep getting the same results, no matter how much you hope for the opposite. Smart people know that if they want a different result, they need to change their approach, even when it’s painful to do so.

Trying to be someone or something you’re not.

It’s tempting to try to be whom you think people want you be, but no one likes a fake, and trying to be someone you’re not never ends well. Smart people figure that out the first time they get called out for being a phony, forget their lines, or drop out of character. Other people never seem to realize that everyone else can see right through their act. They don’t recognize the relationships they’ve damaged, the jobs they’ve lost, and the opportunities they’ve missed as a result of trying to be someone they’re not. Smart people, on the other hand, make that connection right away and realize that happiness and success demand authenticity.

Trying to please everyone.

Almost everyone makes this mistake at some point, but smart people realize it’s simply impossible to please everybody, and trying to please everyone pleases no one. Smart people know that in order to be effective, you have to develop the courage to call the shots and make the choices you feel are right (not the ones everyone will like).

Playing the victim.

News reports and our social media feeds are filled with stories of people who seem to get ahead by playing the victim. Smart people may try it once, but they realize quickly that it’s a form of manipulation and that any benefits will come to a screeching halt as soon as people see it’s a game. But there’s a more subtle aspect of this strategy that only truly smart people grasp: to play the victim, you have to give up your power, and you can’t put a price on that.

Foods To Avoid Like The Plague According to a Food-Safety Expert…

Food-borne illnesses affect millions of Americans each year with sickness and sometimes even death; so being aware of what you consume should be a top priority (think recent Chipotle incident). Bill Marler is the most prominent food-safety lawyer in the US and he recommended 6 foods that he avoids at all cost, so we listened up and took some notes:

1. Unpasteurized (“raw”) milk and packaged juices.

Unpasteurized milk, sometimes called “raw” milk, can be contaminated with bacteria, viruses and parasites. Between 1998 and 2011, there were 148 food poisoning outbreaks linked to raw milk and raw milk products in the US—and keep in mind that comparatively few people in the country ever consume these products, so 148 outbreaks is nothing to ignore

2. Raw sprouts.

Uncooked and lightly cooked sprouts have been linked to more than 30 bacterial outbreaks (mostly ofsalmonella and E. coli) in the US since mid-1990s. As recently as 2014, salmonella from bean sprouts sent 19 people to the hospital.

3. Meat that isn’t well-done.

Marler orders his burgers well-done. “The reason ground products are more problematic and need to be cooked more thoroughly is that any bacteria that’s on the surface of the meat can be ground inside of it,” Marler says. “If it’s not cooked thoroughly to 160°F throughout, it can cause poisoning by E. coli and salmonella and other bacterial illnesses.”

4. Prewashed or precut fruits and vegetables.


I avoid these like the plague,” Marler says. Why? The more a food is handled and processed, the more likely it is to become tainted

5. Raw or undercooked eggs.

You may remember the salmonella epidemic of the 1980s and early ’90s that was linked mainly to eggs. If you swore off raw eggs back then, you might as well stick with it. The most recent salmonella outbreak from eggs, in 2010, caused roughly 2,000 reported cases of illness.

6. Raw oysters and other raw shellfish.

Marler says that raw shellfish—especially oysters—have been causing more foodborne illness lately. He links this to warming waters, which produce more microbial growth.

Do this by applying organizational processes that ensure clear communication — communication effectiveness is the key ingredient of successful leadership, especially when founders aren’t able to bump into everyone on a daily basis.

3. Prepare to address administrative duties.

As your team grows, so will your administrative burden. At some point, you’ll have to decide whether you’re going to continue handling all this paperwork yourself of if you want to hire an administrative assistant to handle it. Doing neither will leave your employees out in the cold.

Tasks such as expense reports and payroll can be taken off your plate by a full-time (or virtual) administrative assistant. Consider the time and effort you’re currently spending on these things; then consider all the things you could be doing.

Accept risk.

When you run wide-open with your idea, completely accepting the risks associated with it, you stand a much better chance of reaching the finish line.

Create a plan.

Anyone can come up with an idea and a desired goal — that’s the easy part. It’s the complete plan that allows you to get from start to finish that’s the difficult part. Write everything down and reverse-engineer a plan that will give you a legitimate shot at accomplishing your goal. Be as detailed as possible, covering every step along the way.

Constantly build momentum.

Taking your idea from concept to fully executed is an uphill journey. You have to constantly build momentum and not stop. If you do, the energy and effort required to get back up to speed will be much greater than it would have been had you kept plugging away. Even if you are working on an idea in your spare time, away from your full-time job, a consistent two hours of work daily is far more beneficial than sporadic full days dedicated to your idea.

Anticipate obstacles.

Entrepreneurship isn’t all fairytales and unicorns, regardless of what you see in the media. Insane valuations, investors fighting to get a piece and bottomless funding are very rare. Shoestring budgets, bootstrapping and constant obstacles are the reality of pursuing your idea. When you go into it expecting — and being mentally prepared — to face obstacles, you stand a much better chance of successfully dealing with them.

Set micro-goals.

Even the most treacherous journey will appear to be do-able if you break it into smaller, easier-to-digest pieces. This is where setting micro-goals can play a very crucial role in bringing your idea to life. It will not only help you make steady progress, but the satisfaction you feel when you accomplish any goal, even a micro one, will give you the motivation and fire inside to push toward the next one.

By manipulating the diet of the mice to include more or less sugar, or to produce a sugar withdrawal effect, scientists can produce similar behaviour to true drug addiction.

What’s more, in a study by French scientists, rats chose sugar over cocaine – even when they were addicted to cocaine.

Not surprisingly, in humans such studies are a bit more difficult to do.

However, research using brain scans found that drinking sugary milkshakes triggered the same ‘reward centre’. 

And as with any potentially addictive substance, the more we consume, the more our reward receptors get numbed to it – so we look for even more to re-create that ‘high’.

How To Have a Constructive Argument With Your Partner

“I love you, but I don’t have to like you right now”, is definitely a quote that comes up in relationships every now and then, as arguments inevitably come up… It’s whether we argue in a constructive way or throw tantrums that determines the route of the relationship. So the next time he leaves the toilet seat up, or she spends too much of the budget on shopping, remember these tips from psychotherapist Vikki Stark, director of the Sedona Counselling Center of Montreal, that will leave you holding hands in no time… or whatever else you like to do to make up 🙂

 

Don’t run from fights. 

Couples in it for the long-haul don’t shy away from discussing topics that could just as easily be swept under the rug. They ask the big, scary questions ASAP — “When, if ever, are we going to have kids?” “What are we going to do if you get that job in another state? I don’t want to move to there!” — so they don’t become bigger isssues in the relationship later on, said Diane Sawaya Cloutier, an author and relationship expert.

“When taboo or uncomfortable topics remain unaddressed, they can turn any benign event into a big drama that could have been avoided in the first place,” she said. “Couples who talk about it can manage potential dramas.”

Start slow and take turns talking.

Arguments generally end the same way they began, said Bonnie Ray Kennan, amarriage and family therapist based in Southern California. Couples who’ve mastered the art of arguing fairly take things slow, addressing difficult conversations with a soft, reassuring tone and dialing it down whenever things get too emotionally charged.

“Starting a difficult conversation softly and respectfully dramatically increases the chances of a good outcome,” she said. “Conversely, a ‘harsh start-up’ is very hard to process well, especially for men.”

Couples who argue with finesse also know the value of give and take: “One person speaks and the other person truly listens,” Ray Kennan said.

Acknowledge each other’s feelings and points of view.

They may be bumping heads but couples in happy, long-time relationships try their best to see the other side of the argument, Kipp said.

“They may say, ‘I know you see it differently than me, but I appreciate that you are listening to my perspective,'” she said. “These positive moments decrease defensiveness and allow for a more productive conversation.”

They never forget that ultimately, they’re a team.

Even during their most tense arguments, healthy couples never forget that they’re a team: for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health…  and until the argument exhausts them and both parties agree that they’d rather call a timeout and get a bite to eat.

“Couples in satisfying long-term relationships are able to remember that, no matter how angry they may be, life will continue after today,” said Stark. “Because of that, they don’t want to do lasting damage. Even in an emotional state, they are able to hang on to the long-term value of the couple. They’re a team, protecting their future together.”

New Study Shows The Super Power of the Brain

The human brain has forever been an object of ongoing studies and new findings since the beginning of time, however this study reveals that the human brain is far more capable than we have ever given it credit for… Read below to gain insight on the brains memory capacity and how significant it really is:

 

“Our new measurements of the brain’s memory capacity increase conservative estimates by a factor of 10 to at least a petabyte,” Dr. Terry Sejnowski, a professor at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California, and co-senior author of a paper describing the research, said in a written statement.

In other words, the human brain may be able to store one petabyte of data, which is 1 quadrillion bytes. That’s enough memory to store 13.3 years of high-definition video.

The finding, published recently in the journal eLife, is considered preliminary and must be confirmed by future research. But it constitutes a significant advance in our understanding of neuroanatomy and could prove to be a step toward the creation of a complete “wiring diagram” of the human brain, Sejnowsky told The Huffington Post.

When the researchers plugged the 8-percent figure into their computer model of the brain, they determined that there must be more than two dozen discrete sizes of synapse rather than just a few. That bigger number, in turn, meant that the synapses must be able to store far more information than anyone knew.

Having more “bits” per synapse is a little like a high-definition TV having more bits per pixel than a conventional TV, Sejnowski said, adding that, “We think the brain is high-resolution now.”
